Unless you’ve been living in a cave or as part of an only just discovered Amazonian tribe you’ll no doubt be aware that the economic and employment situation just about everywhere is in “a bit of a mess” – understatement of the decade that one! Every day we hear of more big companies laying off thousands of workers. This is totally different to normal economic times when typically only the unlucky or simply inefficient/low performers get laid off. Now we’re seeing huge numbers of perfectly good workers being thrown out, careers delayed or even ended. Yes I know this is very doom and gloom and it’s hard not to be pessimistic but there is always light. Believe it or not someone is always hiring  Keep in mind that 10% unemployment, as awful as that sounds, still means that 9 out of 10 people HAVE a job. BUT - Employers can afford to be very picky and only take the most suitable applicants – and for each job posted there will be many more applicants that usual. Never before then has an exceptionally good resume been so important. Back in the day you could do a decent generic one, bang it out to recruitment agencies and wait for the interview invites. Now it’s got to be a level above that. Customized per application – really specific – So you stand out and get that interview. But with who? Likely hiring companies/areas - - Top companies in any industry sector always need staff to take advantage of new opportunities or work on new projects. Ok maybe not investment banking ;) – In your areas of expertise who are the best? Check them out.
- Surplus stock buyers-sellers-suppliers – Any in your area? Check them out, they’ll be busy and may need people.
- Many of the low cost/discount retailers are actually expanding at the moment and opening new shops, in some cases taking over units vacated by their “good times” high prices and now bust competitors. Check out all their websites.
- Public sector – It’s likely that economic stimulus packages will involve creating work in all manner of public projects and sector areas. So don’t discount going looking for work in local or central government agencies. Ok it might not have ever been your career plan but maybe it’s time to think wider and change direction at least until things improve. So what it’s you were in sales, it may be that you have to do admin work for a year or 2, it’s better than the dole. Check out all the websites you can in your area.
And remember, key people retire, fall ill or go on maternity every day and have to be replaced for a business to function. If they can’t replace internally they have to hire. You may need to do some part time training, read books, take some courses if possible. Check your job centre as such things are often free especially now. Do not let your pride or expectations made in the boom years stop you getting work now. Lets get going then.
